Estella Nova and Jeffrey Kovel
Always remember enjoying the Bluebird pas de deux from Sleeping Beauty performed by Estella Nova and Jeffrey Kovel in a performance with the Australian Arts Council at the old Roxy Theatre in Hamilton around the late 1950's or early 1960's.

Austrian folk dancers entertain in Adelaide
Spanish dancer, Estella Nova, and her Australian husband, Jeffrey Kovel, who is a ballet dancer, and now organiser for art forms for schools entertainment with the Australian Arts Council, in Sydney, have left the Festival Ballet Company of London to settle in Sydney. She is a naturalised Australian, having taken the oath of allegiance at a private ceremony during a previous visit to Australia five years ago. Jeffrey Kovel and his wife, Estella Nova, in their flat in Kings Cross. A bull's head woven in cane sits on top of their tape-recorder.
Miss Karen performed in the Kolobok production of Peter and the Wolf for the Australian Arts Council for schools entertainment. With her father I attended three performances on the one day at the Regent Theatre in Sydney.

I had the experience of accompanying Miss Karen and Miss Kim as students in the early 1970's to view the great Moiseyev rehearsing his company before their performance at the Regent Theatre, Sydney during their tour of Australia. In the late 1980's Nelly Samsonova an ex dancer of the Moiseyev Company visited Newcastle as a guest teacher and stayed as a guest with Miss Karen. A mischievous tiny Olivia found her way to Miss Nelly's Dior make-up and presented herself commenting " I Nelly" hastily sending her mother off to replace the Dior make-up!! xx

Maris Liepa

Prominent Russians: Maris Liepa
July 27, 1936 - March 26, 1989
Liepa was the principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and a man of principle.
Born on 27 July in Riga, Latvia Maris was a sickly child. His mother wanted him to become a doctor. But with the intention of improving his health the child was taken to the Latvian Opera and Ballet school. His father, Edward Liepa, was an opera singer but had lost his voice at an early age and became a stage engineer at the Latvian National Opera. Edard Liepa had many theatrical friends who suggested dancing would help strengthen his son’s health.
Funnily enough Maris Liepa’s stage debut was in an opera. He sang in a boys’ choir in “Carmen” at the Riga Opera and Ballet Theater where his father used to perform. By the age of 13 Maris had already danced parts in three children’s ballets and several adult ballets including “Don Quixote” and “Romeo and Juliet.”
Along with ballet Maris practiced sports, gymnastics and swimming. He was Latvia’s repeated champion in free style swimming, which left him with a radiculitis.
