MAYA PLISETSKAYA.
QUOTE: Maya Plisetskaya:
"It turned into a wonderful drama through a sculptural language. Sculpture is the most expressive quality that each of us has, I am convinced that it was not the word that came first but gesture. A gesture is understood by everyone. A gesture can be like this or it can be one of despair, such a gesture, every gesture, it can be understood, you need nothing else, no words."
This is how Plisetskaya captivated her audience and why she was held in such high esteem and gave such breathtaking performances!!!!! xx

QUOTE: “You know that dance depends on the music. Whatever music the composer offers, the dance will reflect it. To listen to the music is the most important thing of all. I’m not sure if this is taught in ballet classes. There they just beat time, but then it’s not a role, it’s not music. But that’s necessary, absolutely necessary and if the music & subject matter are different then the artist must be different too”.

MAYA PLISETSKAYA INTERVIEW.
Maya Plisetskaya about dance (Russian) - an interview.
=============================
From my experience. All audiences are good if you perform well.
I feel it when I am taking the audience, and I take them by giving them something. Sometimes I can not understand, what it is specifically. But I feel, that something is coming from me. I force the audience to be attentive, then to hold their breath, then I have great success.
This means I have performed well. And this concerns any audience, because all people are the same. People perceive both life and art equally: it either touches the soul or not. And nothing else!
That's why I don't like to dance 'about nothing'. Just 'dance about nothing'. Then it is 'about nothing' in your soul as well. And what all this is for?..
Recently some people very often show us: look, this is - ' modern dance ', you probably don't understand. A person thinks - probably I am stupid, because I don't understand. They don't believe themselves. This is wrong! Believe yourself, believe, if something makes an impression on you - that means it is good. If it makes no impression - it is NOT good.
It happened to me once in India when I danced The Dying Swan by Saint-Saens, and nobody asked me what this dance was about. Then I danced pas de deux from 'Don Quichote' - with tricks, with fuettes. All Indians were asking me: what was this all about? I don't know either. About 32 fuettes. And this doesn't touch you. One can make 100 fuettes - and it won't touch your soul. Ah-oh, tricks - how great! In this case you need to go to the circus - they do tricks 100 times better. Or gymnastics - a free routine. They would do anything - tie themselves into a bungle. How difficult it is to perform on a balance beam, it is frightful to watch. We see great SKILL, but not art.

MAYA PLISETSKAYA.
http://www.youtube.com/channel/HC3ZrqquVR4ZM?feature=relchannel
This is a series on Plisetskaya of continuous videos...having over my lifetime delighted to see her perform live, also at the Movies her Carmen and Ballet Poems (a tribute to her and a finale of her variation of curtsies in all her costumed roles}. Listening this morning on ABC radio and enjoying Margaret Throsby interview Colin Peasley I cannot agree with his choice of the greatest ballerina....Fonteyn was not in my view and I'm sure many ballet lovers, the equal of Maya Plisetskaya. This is time consuming however well worth the viewing. xx

Dying Swan
A most memorable ballet experience for our family attending her performance of the Dying Swan at the Regent Theatre in Sydney. With continual tumultuous applause instantly reverting to breathless silence when she beckoned to the conductor and moved back into the spotlight and with disbelief we witnessed an encore performance.

Carmen
The world's greatest ballerina. In the late 1960's I was thrilled to have her permission through security to be taken with Miss Karen and Miss Kim, then young girls, to meet her in her dressing room backstage at the sadly now demolished Regent Theatre in George Street Sydney....the girls were thrilled to receive from her a pair of worn signed pointe shoes..she was stunningly beautiful!!! xx
