Pyotr
Tchaikovsky, a great Russian composer, was born on this day 173 years
ago. Tchaikovsky’s music is widely known around the world, the image of
Russia and Russian music is closely associated with his name.
Tchaikovsky’s works are in the core of
the Mariinsky repertoire, his music is performed quite often. Some of
his works will be performed this month: operas Eugene Onegin and The
Queen of Spades at the historical stage, and Iolanta at the new stage,
ballets The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker at the
historical stage. A pair of George Balanchine’s ballets set to music by
Tchaikovsky will be performed too: Diamonds, the third part of Jewels
(set to Symphony No. 3) at the new stage and Ballet Imperial (set to
Piano Concerto No. 2) at the historical stage. Pianist Denis Matsuev will play Tchaikovsky’s piano cycle The Seasons at the new Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) on Sunday, May 19
