2011 McDonald's Ballet Scholarship Sydney Eisteddfod.

Excerpts from Dance Australia Magazine Article:

"finalist Dann Wilkinson (16yrs), had never seen a professional company dance before......for adjudicator Wim Broeckx it was a sad indictment on the development of young Australian dancers. "Don't they know about You Tube?" .....for the urbane Broeckx, the lack of knowledge about the world ballet scene was evident, not necessarily in the technical aspects of the work presented by the final eight, but most definitely in the sense of artistry on display. As artistic president of the Prix de Lausanne and former principal dancer with Dutch National Ballet, Broeckx knows something about both artisty and competition.
Claiming he had been "amazed at the really high level of technique", Broeckx was adamant to point out that this competition was about much more than technique alone. What was lacking in the competition he said was "what is lacking in society in general. There is too much accent on technique and not enough on artistry and musicality, the things that separate ballet from gymnastics as an artform".
Concentrating merely on technique, he bellieves, makes young Australian dancers behave like "horses with blinkers on". The youngsters revealed their weaknesses in the interview process, where Broeckx claims they were unable to discuss influences, nor name international choreographers or cite any knowledge of current world contemporary dance trends."
